Arthritis in Dogs: Signs and Management

Arthritis is the commonest cause of chronic pain in older dogs, and the most commonly written off as normal ageing.

Signs

Stiffness after rest that eases with movement, reluctance on stairs or into cars, lying down slowly, licking a joint, and irritability when touched.

Weight is the biggest lever

Every extra kilogram loads the joints on every step. Weight reduction produces more improvement than any supplement.

Treatment

Vet-prescribed anti-inflammatories used properly, joint supplements, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy where available. Never give human painkillers — ibuprofen and paracetamol cause ulceration and organ failure in dogs.

Non-slip mats on tiles, a firm orthopaedic bed, ramps, and shorter more frequent walks instead of one long one.
