Digital X-ray
X-rays show bones, the chest and parts of the abdomen. Vets use them to find fractures and joint problems, swallowed objects, bladder stones, and changes in the lungs and heart outline. Digital images are available quickly, and the vet can show them to you on screen.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves to look at soft organs such as the liver, kidneys, bladder, spleen, stomach, intestines and uterus. It helps explain vomiting, belly pain, urinary problems and unexplained weight loss, and guides the next step, such as lab tests or surgery. It is painless: the area is usually clipped and gel is applied.
Pregnancy scans
An ultrasound about four weeks after mating can confirm pregnancy in a dog or cat. Later scans check on the puppies or kittens and the mother's health. The vet advises the best timing.
Preparing your pet
- For an abdominal ultrasound the vet may ask you to hold back food for several hours and to avoid letting your pet urinate just before the scan. Follow the instructions you are given.
- For X-rays your pet needs to lie still. A calm pet needs nothing extra; an anxious or painful pet may need sedation, which the vet will discuss with you.
- Bring earlier reports and X-rays, if you have them.
Emergency imaging
After an accident, or when a pet is struggling to breathe or has a swollen belly, imaging can be done the same day during clinic hours. Please call ahead.
