A cat that stops using its box is not being spiteful. It is telling you something is wrong — medically, or with the box itself.
Rule out medical first
Urinary tract infection, crystals, bladder inflammation and kidney disease all cause avoidance, because the cat associates the box with pain. A male cat straining without producing urine is an emergency.
The box maths
One box per cat, plus one. Placed apart, not in a row. Away from food, water and washing machines. Uncovered boxes are preferred by most cats even though owners prefer covered ones.
Litter and cleaning
Most cats prefer fine, unscented clumping litter about 5 cm deep. Scoop daily. Avoid strong disinfectants — anything with a phenol smell repels cats and some are toxic.
Stress
A new pet, a new baby, building work, or a cat visible through a window can all trigger it. Cleaning soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner matters; ordinary detergent leaves scent markers that invite repeat use.
