Why Is My Cat Not Drinking Water?

Cats descend from desert animals and have a weak thirst drive. Chronic mild dehydration underlies much feline urinary and kidney disease.

Why intake matters

Concentrated urine encourages crystal formation and bladder inflammation, and adds load to ageing kidneys.

Practical ways to increase it

Add wet food. Place several water bowls away from food and litter. Use wide, shallow bowls — many cats dislike their whiskers touching the sides. Try a pet fountain; moving water is more attractive to most cats.

Material matters

Ceramic, glass or steel. Plastic bowls hold odours and are associated with chin acne.

When it is a symptom

A sudden increase in drinking is as significant as a decrease, and often indicates kidney disease, diabetes or hyperthyroidism. Get bloodwork.
