Cognitive Dysfunction in Older Pets

Cognitive dysfunction is the animal equivalent of dementia. It is common, under-diagnosed, and partially manageable.

The DISHA pattern

Disorientation, altered Interactions, Sleep-wake cycle changes, House-soiling, and reduced Activity. Getting stuck behind furniture or staring at walls is characteristic.

Rule out other causes first

Pain, deafness, blindness, hypertension and hyperthyroidism can all look similar and are treatable.

What helps

A strict routine, night lights, keeping furniture in fixed positions, food puzzles for mental stimulation, and specific diets and supplements your vet can advise on.

It is progressive

Early intervention slows decline. Waiting until night howling is severe leaves fewer options.
