Crate Training: Why It Helps and How to Do It Kindly

A crate used correctly is a bedroom. Used as punishment it becomes a cage, and the dog will fight it forever.

Why it helps

It speeds house training, gives an anxious dog somewhere safe during noise or visitors, and makes vet stays and travel far less frightening.

Building the association

Feed meals inside with the door open. Throw treats in and let the dog leave freely. Only close the door once entering is enthusiastic, and then for seconds at first.

Rules that matter

Never use it as punishment. Never leave a dog crated for long stretches — a few hours at most for an adult, far less for a puppy. Remove collars to avoid snagging.

If the dog panics

Stop and go back several steps. Genuine crate panic in a dog with separation anxiety needs a different plan; forcing it makes the anxiety worse.
