Dog-Proofing an Indian Home

Most emergency cases in urban Indian practice come from inside the home, not outside it.

Balconies and grilles

Falls from balconies are one of the commonest urban injuries, especially in cats and small dogs. Mesh any gap a head can pass through.

Cleaning products

Phenyl and other phenol-based floor cleaners are toxic to pets, cats especially, and dogs walk on treated floors then lick their paws. Rinse or switch to a pet-safe cleaner.

Cables and small objects

Puppies chew charging cables — route them out of reach. Hair ties, rubber bands and thread cause intestinal obstruction, and thread with a needle attached is a surgical emergency.

Kitchen and bins

A lidded bin prevents most poisoning and obstruction cases. Keep onion, garlic and chocolate off low shelves.
