Build in tiny steps
Touch the brush to the shoulder, treat, stop. Next session, one stroke, treat, stop. Ending before the animal reaches its limit is the whole method.
Handle the paws separately
Most grooming fear is about paws and nails. Practise holding a paw for one second and rewarding, daily, outside of any actual grooming.
Short and frequent beats long and rare
Five minutes daily is more productive than an hour-long battle each month.
When to use sedation
For a severely matted or terrified animal, sedation at a clinic is kinder than restraint. It is a reasonable choice, not a failure.
