How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog?

Over-bathing is a more common cause of skin problems in Indian pet dogs than under-bathing. Shampoo strips the oil layer that keeps skin barrier intact.

A reasonable frequency

Most dogs: once every 3–4 weeks. Short-coated breeds can go longer. Oily coats (Labradors, Cocker Spaniels) may need every 2–3 weeks. Double-coated northern breeds need less frequent baths but far more brushing.

Use dog shampoo only

Human and baby shampoo is formulated for a different skin pH and causes dryness and itching. Medicated shampoos should be used for the duration and contact time the vet specifies — usually 5–10 minutes on the coat, which most people cut short.

Drying is half the job

Damp undercoat leads to hot spots and fungal infection, particularly in the monsoon. Dry to the skin, not just the surface.

Brushing beats bathing

For most coats, regular brushing removes more dirt and loose hair than a bath does, without touching the skin barrier at all.
