Bathing a Cat: When It's Necessary and How

Cats groom themselves effectively and most never need bathing. Doing it unnecessarily strips coat oils and damages trust.

When it is necessary

Something toxic or sticky on the coat, a medicated bath for a skin condition, a very obese or arthritic cat that cannot reach parts of itself, or a severely soiled rescue.

Preparation

Trim nails first. Have everything within reach. Put a towel or mat in the sink so the cat is not slipping — much of the panic is about losing footing.

Method

A few inches of lukewarm water, a jug rather than a shower spray, avoid the head entirely, cat shampoo only. Work quickly and calmly, then wrap in a towel.

Afterwards

Dry thoroughly in a warm room. Most cats will not tolerate a dryer; towel and time are safer than forcing it.
