Is Grain-Free Food Better for Dogs?

Grain-free is one of the most successful marketing ideas in pet food, and one of the least supported by evidence.

Grain allergy is rare

True food allergy in dogs is most often to a protein — beef, chicken or dairy — not to wheat or maize. Removing grain while keeping the same protein usually changes nothing.

The DCM question

Regulators have investigated a possible link between some grain-free diets high in peas and legumes and dilated cardiomyopathy. The link is not proven, but it is enough reason not to choose grain-free without a reason.

When it does make sense

On a vet-directed elimination trial, or for a specific diagnosed intolerance.

A better question

Ask whether the food is complete, balanced and from a manufacturer that does feeding trials — that matters far more than the grain question.
