Kennel Cough: When a Cough Needs a Vet

Kennel cough is a syndrome rather than one organism, and it spreads readily wherever dogs gather — boarding, grooming, parks.

What it sounds like

A dry, honking cough, often ending in a retch that owners mistake for vomiting. The dog usually remains bright and eats normally.

Course

Mild cases resolve in one to three weeks. Cough suppressants and rest are usually all that is needed.

When it is serious

Lethargy, fever, loss of appetite or laboured breathing suggest pneumonia — more likely in puppies, seniors and flat-faced breeds. That needs immediate care.

Prevention

The Bordetella vaccine reduces severity and is worth having before boarding or grooming. Keep a coughing dog away from other dogs for two weeks after signs stop.
