Early markers
Increased drinking and urinating, gradual weight loss, and a duller coat. By the time appetite drops and vomiting starts, the disease is advanced.
Screening
Annual bloodwork from about seven years, and twice yearly after ten. The SDMA marker detects loss earlier than creatinine alone.
What slows it
A renal diet with restricted phosphorus is the single most evidence-backed intervention. Blood pressure control and phosphate binders where indicated. Hydration support matters enormously.
Quality of life
Many cats live years after diagnosis. Appetite, weight and hydration are the practical things to track at home.
