Orphaned kittens are commonly found in Indian homes and building compounds. Their needs in the first weeks are specific and unforgiving.
Warmth first, food second
A cold kitten cannot digest. Warm it gently to normal body temperature before offering anything. A heat source with room to crawl away from it is essential.
Feeding
Kitten milk replacer only — cow's milk causes diarrhoea and dehydration. Feed on the stomach, never on the back. Every 2–3 hours under two weeks.
Toileting
Kittens under about three weeks cannot urinate or defecate without stimulation. Wipe the genital area with damp cotton after each feed.
Weaning and vet care
Introduce wet food gruel around four weeks. Deworm from two weeks, vaccinate from about eight. Any kitten that is not gaining weight daily needs a vet the same day.
