Kitten-Proofing Your Home

Kittens climb and squeeze into places dogs never reach, which makes the hazard list quite different.

String and thread

The single most dangerous household item for a kitten. Swallowed thread saws through intestine, and a needle attached is worse. Store all sewing materials closed away.

Balconies and windows

Cats fall. Mesh every opening. Do not rely on a cat's balance — a bird or a startle is enough.

Appliances

Kittens sleep in warm dark spaces. Check washing machines, dryers and under recliner chairs before use, every time.

Plants and cords

Lilies are lethal to cats. Blind cords are a strangulation risk. Tie them up out of reach.
