Monsoon Pet Care: Skin, Paws and Infections

The monsoon is the hardest season for Indian pets' skin. Persistent damp plus warmth is ideal for fungus, bacteria and ticks all at once.

Dry completely, every time

A damp coat is the root of most monsoon skin disease. Towel thoroughly and use a blow dryer on a cool setting, paying attention to armpits, groin, between toes and under the ears.

Paws after every walk

Rinse and dry the paws, and check between the toes. Standing water carries leptospirosis, which is transmitted through rodent urine and can infect humans — if your dog wades through puddles, keep the lepto vaccine current.

Ears

Floppy-eared breeds get yeast infections now. A weekly check and a vet-approved ear cleaner prevents most of them. Never insert a cotton bud into the canal.

Food and water

Kibble absorbs moisture fast; seal the bag properly and discard anything that smells off. Change drinking water more often — bowls grow biofilm quickly in this weather.
