Monsoon Nutrition and Gut Health

Gastrointestinal cases rise sharply during monsoon, and most of the causes are avoidable.

Food storage

Humidity turns fat rancid and encourages mould in kibble. Keep it sealed in its original bag inside an airtight container, buy smaller bags, and discard anything that smells off. Mycotoxins from mouldy food cause serious illness.

Water

Waterborne infection rises in monsoon. Give the same water you would drink yourself, change bowls more than once a day, and wash them — biofilm forms quickly.

Avoid street scavenging

Discarded food spoils within hours in this weather, and puddles carry leptospirosis.

If diarrhoea starts

Withhold food for a few hours in an adult dog, offer small amounts of water frequently, then bland boiled rice and chicken. Blood, lethargy or more than a day of symptoms means a vet, not another day of home care.
