Parvovirus in Puppies: Recognise It Early

Parvo is endemic across India and kills unvaccinated puppies fast. Survival depends almost entirely on how early treatment starts.

Early signs

Lethargy and refusing food come first, then vomiting, then profuse and often bloody diarrhoea with a distinctive smell. A puppy that skips a meal and seems flat deserves a same-day parvo test.

Why it is fatal

It destroys the intestinal lining and attacks white blood cells, so the puppy loses fluid rapidly and cannot fight secondary infection.

Treatment

There is no cure for the virus itself. Survival comes from intensive supportive care — intravenous fluids, anti-nausea medication, antibiotics for secondary infection, and nutrition. Hospitalisation gives far better odds than home treatment.

Disinfection

The virus survives months in the environment and resists most household cleaners. Only bleach at roughly 1:30 dilution, with ten minutes of contact time, reliably kills it. Do not bring a new puppy into an infected home for months.
