When Your Pet Needs Anaesthesia: What to Expect

Anaesthesia worries owners more than almost anything else. Modern protocols are considerably safer than their reputation, and the preparation is what makes the difference.

Pre-anaesthetic work-up

Bloodwork checks organ function and clotting. In older animals a cardiac assessment may be added. This is where risk is actually reduced.

Fasting

Usually food withheld for several hours beforehand, water often allowed until closer to the time. Follow your clinic's specific instruction — over-fasting a small puppy causes low blood sugar.

During

A trained person should monitor oxygen saturation, blood pressure, ECG and temperature throughout, with intravenous fluids running. Ask whether this is included; it is the difference that matters.

Recovery

Grogginess for a day is normal. Restrict activity, keep the incision dry, use a cone, and call if there is swelling, discharge or refusal to eat beyond 24 hours.
