Puppy Biting: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

Puppies explore with their mouths and learn bite force from littermates. A puppy that mouths you is normal; the goal is teaching control, not eliminating the behaviour overnight.

In the moment

When teeth touch skin, let out a short high yelp, then stop all interaction and turn away for 10–20 seconds. The game ending is the consequence that teaches. Resume calmly afterwards.

Redirect, always

Have a toy within reach at all times. Swap your hand for the toy rather than simply pulling away — a moving hand invites chasing.

Check for tiredness

The sharpest biting almost always happens in an overtired puppy. If it escalates and will not settle, the answer is a nap in a quiet space, not more correction.

What makes it worse

Holding the muzzle shut, alpha rolls, tapping the nose, or shouting. All of them raise arousal, teach the puppy that hands are unpredictable, and increase the risk of real aggression later.
