Caring for a Senior Cat

Cats are considered senior from about eleven. They hide decline well, so screening rather than watching is the right approach.

Screen for three things

Chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and diabetes account for most illness in older cats, and all three are detectable on routine blood and urine tests before symptoms appear.

Weight is the earliest signal

Gradual weight loss is often the first sign of all three. Weigh monthly at home; owners rarely notice it by eye.

Home adjustments

A litter tray with one low side, steps to favourite perches, warm soft bedding, and food and water on the same floor the cat sleeps on.

Grooming help

Arthritic cats stop grooming their back and rump. Gentle daily brushing prevents matting and is a good excuse to check for lumps.
