Small Breeds in Apartments: Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Dachshund

Small does not mean low-maintenance. Each of these breeds carries a specific requirement people underestimate.

Shih Tzu

Flat-faced, so heat-sensitive, and a long coat that mats within days without daily combing. Most owners are happier keeping it in a short clip.

Pomeranian

A double coat that must never be shaved, a tendency to bark at everything without training, and dental crowding needing regular attention.

Dachshund

The long back is the whole story. Stairs, jumping off sofas and being carried badly all raise the risk of intervertebral disc disease. Use ramps and keep them lean.

Common to all

Small dogs are frequently under-socialised and under-trained because their behaviour is easy to pick up and carry away. That is how a fearful, snappy adult is made.
