Stopping a Dog From Jumping on People

Jumping is a greeting behaviour that has been rewarded, usually accidentally, with attention. Any attention counts, including being pushed away.

Remove the reward

The instant paws leave the ground, turn away and fold your arms. No words, no eye contact. Turn back only when all four feet are down.

Reward the alternative

Teach and heavily reward a sit for greeting. A dog cannot sit and jump simultaneously.

Why kneeing and shouting fail

Both are attention, and both can injure or frighten a dog into a defensive response. Neither teaches what to do instead.

Everyone must comply

One visitor who greets an airborne dog undoes a week. Ask guests in advance, and keep the dog on a lead for greetings while training.
