Leash Pulling: How to Actually Stop It

Dogs pull because it works — they pull, and they get to move forward. The fix is making it stop working.

Stop-and-wait

The moment the lead tightens, stop completely. Wait. When the lead loosens, walk on. Progress is slow at first and then sudden. Be prepared to cover very little ground for a week.

Reward position

Feed treats at your knee while walking. The dog learns that the place beside you pays.

Equipment that helps

A front-clip harness redirects a pulling dog sideways rather than letting it lean into pressure. Avoid choke, prong and shock collars — they suppress the behaviour through pain and raise aggression risk.

Consistency is everything

If pulling works even one walk in five, it persists. Everyone in the house has to follow the same rule.
