Equipment

A well-fitted harness gives more control than a neck collar and protects the trachea, which matters for small breeds. Use a fixed-length lead near traffic; retractable leads offer no real control in an emergency.

Meeting free-roaming dogs

Do not panic or run. Shorten the lead, keep walking calmly and put your body between your dog and the other. Avoid direct staring. Carry a stick or umbrella to open as a visual barrier if needed — as a deterrent, never to strike.

Early morning and after dark in summer. Check pavement temperature with your hand.
