Why Does My Dog Eat Grass?

Grass eating is common and usually harmless. The old idea that dogs eat grass only to make themselves sick is not supported by observation — most dogs that eat grass do not vomit afterwards.

Likely reasons

Boredom, taste, fibre-seeking, or simple habit. Puppies explore with their mouths and often pick it up as a game.

When to worry

Sudden, frantic grass eating with lip-licking, drooling or repeated retching can indicate nausea or acid reflux, and warrants a vet visit.

The real risk is what is on the grass

Pesticide and herbicide residue in parks, and roundworm eggs on ground used by street dogs. That is the reason to discourage it in public places.

Managing it

More sniffing time on walks, food puzzles at home, and a check that the diet has adequate fibre.
