Why Is My Cat Meowing So Much?

Adult cats mostly meow at humans, not at each other. It is learned communication, and a change in it is worth reading.

Common reasons

Hunger, wanting a door opened, greeting, or attention that has previously been rewarded by giving in. Intermittent reinforcement makes it louder and more persistent.

Heat

An unspayed female in heat yowls persistently and attracts males. Spaying resolves it and prevents pyometra.

Medical causes worth ruling out

Hyperthyroidism in middle-aged and older cats causes restlessness, weight loss despite a big appetite, and night vocalising. Hypertension and pain also present this way.

Night howling in seniors

Often cognitive dysfunction. A night light, a predictable routine and a late meal help; discuss it with your vet rather than accepting it.
