Why Is My Dog Shedding So Much?

Shedding is normal; a sudden change in shedding is not. Knowing the difference saves unnecessary treatments.

Normal patterns

In much of India the temperature swing is small enough that double-coated breeds shed steadily all year rather than in two clean seasonal blowouts. It looks constant because it is.

When it is abnormal

Bald patches, symmetrical hair loss on both flanks, broken hairs, itching, or hair that comes out in clumps with visible skin. Those point to parasites, fungal infection, allergy or a hormonal problem such as hypothyroidism.

What actually reduces it

Brushing — daily during heavy periods, using an undercoat rake for double coats. An omega-3 supplement improves coat quality over about eight weeks.

Do not shave a double coat

It does not reduce heat, it removes the insulating layer that keeps heat out, and the coat often regrows patchy.
