Why Punishment-Based Training Backfires

Aversive methods — choke chains, alpha rolls, shouting, shock — often stop a behaviour in the moment. The research on what happens afterwards is consistent and not favourable.

It suppresses signals, not emotions

Punishing a growl removes the warning while leaving the fear that caused it, producing a dog that bites without warning.

It damages the relationship

Dogs trained with aversives show more stress behaviours and are more pessimistic in cognitive bias testing than dogs trained with rewards.

The dominance idea is outdated

It came from studies of unrelated captive wolves and does not describe either wild wolf families or dog-human relationships.

What to do instead

Decide what you want the dog to do instead of the unwanted behaviour, make that easy and rewarding, and manage the environment so the unwanted option is not available.
