Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient & Pharmacological Mechanism

• Active Composition: Each film-coated tablet contains Finasteride IP 5 mg (Excipients q.s.).

• Pharmacological Class: Synthetic 4-Azasteroid / Specific Type II 5α-Reductase Inhibitor (Anti-Androgenic).

• Mechanism of Action:

  • The development and maintenance of BPH in intact male dogs depend on the local conversion of testosterone to $5\alpha$-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by intracellular Type II $5\alpha$-reductase. DHT binds with high affinity to nuclear androgen receptors within prostatic stromal and epithelial cells, triggering excessive cellular hyperplasia.

  • Finasteride competitively and irreversibly binds to Type II $5\alpha$-reductase, blocking the conversion pathway. This selective suppression lowers intraprostatic DHT levels, inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death) of excess epithelial cells, leading to marked shrinkage of the prostate gland without suppressing systemic testosterone.

Dosage & Administration Guidelines

Administer strictly under veterinary supervision based on clinical diagnosis and abdominal ultrasound findings.

• Recommended Dosage:

  • Standard Weight-Based Dose: 0.1 mg to 0.5 mg per kg body weight once daily (OD).

  • Empirical Weight Band: For dogs weighing 10 kg to 50 kg, the standard veterinary protocol is 5 mg (1 tablet) orally once daily.

• Administration Instructions:

  • Administer once every 24 hours at approximately the same time each day.

  • Can be administered directly by mouth or hidden inside a small portion of wet food or a treat.

  • May be administered with or without meals without affecting bioabsorption.

• Treatment Duration:

  • Initial clinical improvements in urination and straining are typically observed within 1 to 4 weeks.

  • Complete prostatic involution generally requires 8 to 16 weeks of continuous therapy.

  • Note: Because BPH is an ongoing, hormone-dependent condition, discontinuation of therapy will result in gradual regrowth of the prostate gland over several months. Ongoing maintenance therapy or subsequent surgical neutering should be planned with your veterinarian.

Safety Warnings, Handling & Precautions

• Human Safety Warning (Special Handling for Women): Finasteride is teratogenic. Pregnant women or women of childbearing potential must not handle crushed or broken Finapet tablets due to the potential risk of transdermal absorption and subsequent abnormalities in male fetuses.

• Canine Specificity: Not indicated for female dogs, puppies, or cats.

• Prostatic Carcinoma Evaluation: BPH must be clinically differentiated from prostatic adenocarcinoma, bacterial prostatitis, or prostatic abscesses via digital rectal palpation, ultrasound, and cytology before initiating therapy. Finasteride does not treat prostatic neoplasia.
