• CRITICAL CONTRAINDICATION IN COLLIE-TYPE BREEDS (MDR1 / ABCB1 GENE DEFECT): DO NOT ADMINISTER TO COLLIES, BORDER COLLIES, AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS, SHETLAND SHEEPDOGS, OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOGS, OR RELATED CROSSES. Dogs homozygous for the mutant MDR1 (ABCB1-1Δ) allele lack a functional P-glycoprotein blood-brain barrier pump. In these breeds, ivermectin crosses freely into the central nervous system, causing severe neurotoxicity characterized by mydriasis (dilated pupils), ataxia, tremors, hypersalivation, coma, and death.
