Clinical Indications

• Canine Cardiology: Adjunctive management of mild, moderate, or severe Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) resulting from Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) or Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) (commonly combined with Pimobendan and diuretics).

• Feline & Canine Nephrology: Reduction of proteinuria associated with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD / IRIS Stages 2 to 4).

• Systemic Arterial Hypertension: Management of primary and secondary hypertension in cats and dogs, safeguarding against retinal detachment, hypertensive encephalopathy, and nephrosclerosis.

Dosage & Administration Guidelines

Administer orally once daily (or divided twice daily in refractory cardiac cases) strictly as directed by your veterinarian:

• Standard Therapeutic Dosage Rates:

  • Dogs: 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg Benazepril HCl per kg body weight once daily. (Dose may be titrated up to 0.5 mg/kg twice daily in severe CHF under cardiology direction).

  • Cats: 0.5 mg to 1.0 mg Benazepril HCl per kg body weight once daily.

• Administration Instructions:

  • Can be given directly by hand or mixed with a small portion of food.

  • Unlike pimobendan, benazepril absorption is not meaningfully affected by food and can be administered with or without meals.

  • Maintain consistent daily dosing at the same time each day to preserve steady-state blood pressure control.

• Clinical Monitoring Protocol:

  • Check baseline serum creatinine, BUN, and electrolytes (potassium) before initiating therapy, and re-evaluate 7 to 14 days after starting or increasing the dose.

  • Monitor systemic blood pressure regularly to confirm target blood pressure reduction.

Safety Warnings, Precautions & Storage

• Prescription Only: Administer strictly under veterinary supervision.

• Contraindications:

  • Do NOT use in animals with hemodynamic hypotension, hypovolemia, or acute renal failure.

  • Do NOT use in cases of cardiac output failure due to aortic stenosis, pulmonic stenosis, or obstructive cardiomyopathy.

• Pregnancy & Lactation: Strictly contraindicated in pregnant or lactating animals; ACE inhibitors cross the placenta and can cause fetal renal dysgenesis and neonatal death.

• Drug Interactions:

  • Use with caution alongside potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., Spironolactone) as hyperkalemia may develop.

  • Concurrent use with NSAIDs (e.g., Meloxicam, Carprofen) may reduce hypotensive efficacy and elevate nephrotoxicity risk.

• Potential Side Effects: Transient lethargy, mild hypotension, or mild gastrointestinal signs (vomiting/soft stool) may occur upon treatment initiation. A mild, non-progressive rise in serum creatinine is normal as intraglomerular pressure normalizes; however, marked elevations warrant dose reassessment.

• Storage: Store below 25°C in a dry place. Protect from heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. Keep unused tablet halves sealed in the original blister foil and use within 3 days. Keep strictly out of reach of children and household pets.
