Clinical Indications

• Canine & Feline Dermatology: Superficial bacterial folliculitis, puppy pyoderma, deep pyoderma, interdigital furunculosis, and infected hot spots (Staphylococcus pseudintermedius).

• Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Acute and recurrent bacterial cystitis and nephritis caused by susceptible E. coli or Proteus strains.

• Soft Tissue & Wound Infections: Infected lacerations, puncture wounds, postoperative surgical site infections, and abscesses.

• Respiratory Infections: Secondary bacterial tracheobronchitis, kennel cough complications, and bronchopneumonia.

• Bone & Joint Infections: Adjunctive management of osteomyelitis and septic arthritis under veterinary culture direction.

Dosage & Administration Guidelines

Administer orally twice daily (every 12 hours) strictly as directed by your veterinarian:

• Standard Therapeutic Dosage Rate: 15 mg to 30 mg Cephalexin per kg body weight every 12 hours (typical dermatology target is 22–30 mg/kg BID).

• Cephavet 300mg Weight-Band Dosing (at ~20–30 mg/kg BID):

  • 5 kg to 7.5 kg (Small Dog / Large Cat): 1/2 Tablet every 12 hours

  • 10 kg to 15 kg (Small-to-Medium Dog): 1 Tablet every 12 hours

  • 16 kg to 22.5 kg (Medium Dog): 1.5 Tablets every 12 hours

  • (For dogs over 25 kg, Cephavet 600mg is clinically preferred to reduce pill burden).

• Administration Instructions:

  • Can be given directly by mouth or hidden inside a small treat or meal portion.

  • Administer with Food: Giving cephalexin with or immediately after food reduces the incidence of transient nausea or vomiting.

• Course Duration:

  • Superficial Pyoderma / Hot Spots: 14 to 21 consecutive days (continue treatment for 7 to 10 days past complete visual resolution of lesions).

  • Deep Pyoderma / Furunculosis: 28 to 42 consecutive days (continue for 14 days past complete resolution).

  • Urinary Tract Infections: 7 to 14 consecutive days.

  • Complete the Prescribed Course: Always complete the full course prescribed by your veterinarian. Never discontinue early upon visible symptom improvement, as premature cessation promotes bacterial relapse and antimicrobial resistance.

Safety Warnings, Precautions & Storage

• Prescription Only: Administer strictly under qualified veterinary direction.

• Contraindications: Do NOT use in animals with known hypersensitivity or anaphylactic allergies to cephalosporins or beta-lactam penicillins.

• Species Restriction: Do NOT administer to rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, or hamsters; beta-lactams cause fatal clostridial enterotoxemia in small hindgut fermenters.

• Renal Monitoring: Cephalexin is eliminated primarily via renal filtration. In pets with pre-existing renal compromise, dosing intervals should be calibrated by a veterinarian.

• Potential Side Effects: Generally well tolerated. Occasional mild, self-limiting digestive upset (vomiting, reduced appetite, or soft stools) can occur, which typically resolves when administered with meals.

• Storage: Store below 25°C in a dry place. Protect from heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. Keep unused tablet halves sealed inside the blister foil and administer within 3 days. Keep strictly out of reach of children and domestic pets.
