Clinical Indications

• Canine Dermatology & Pyoderma: Superficial bacterial folliculitis, puppy pyoderma (impetigo), deep pyoderma, interdigital furunculosis, and infected hot spots (Staphylococcus pseudintermedius).

• Wound & Soft Tissue Infections: Lacerations, bite punctures, postoperative surgical site infections, and infected abscesses.

• Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Acute bacterial cystitis and nephritis caused by susceptible E. coli or Proteus strains.

• Respiratory Infections: Secondary bacterial tracheobronchitis and bronchopneumonia.

• Orthopedic & Skeletal Support: Adjunctive management of osteomyelitis and septic arthritis under veterinary culture direction.

Dosage & Administration Guidelines

Administer orally twice daily (every 12 hours) strictly as directed by your veterinarian:

• Standard Therapeutic Dosage Rate: 15 mg to 30 mg Cephalexin per kg body weight every 12 hours (typical dermatology standard is 22–30 mg/kg BID).

• Cephavet 600mg Weight-Band Dosing (at ~20–30 mg/kg BID):

  • 10 kg to 15 kg Dog: 1/2 Tablet every 12 hours

  • 20 kg to 30 kg Dog: 1 Tablet every 12 hours

  • 35 kg to 45 kg Dog: 1.5 Tablets every 12 hours

  • 50 kg to 60 kg Dog: 2 Tablets every 12 hours

  • (For cats and dogs weighing under 10 kg, lower strength Cephavet 300mg or Cephavet 100mg tablets/suspensions are clinically recommended for accurate titration).

• Administration Instructions:

  • Can be given directly or hidden inside a small treat/meal portion.

  • Administer with Food: Giving cephalexin with or immediately after food reduces the incidence of transient nausea or vomiting.

• Treatment Duration:

  • Superficial Pyoderma / Hot Spots: 14 to 21 consecutive days (continue treatment for 7 days past complete visual resolution of lesions).

  • Deep Pyoderma / Furunculosis: 28 to 42 consecutive days (continue for 14 days past complete resolution).

  • Urinary Tract Infections: 7 to 14 consecutive days.

  • Never stop the course early, even if visible lesions heal, as premature discontinuation causes immediate relapse and antibiotic resistance.

Safety Warnings, Precautions & Storage

• Contraindications: Do NOT use in animals with known hypersensitivity or anaphylactic allergies to cephalosporins or beta-lactam penicillins.

• Species Restriction: Do NOT administer to rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, or hamsters; beta-lactams cause fatal enterotoxemia in small hindgut fermenters.

• Renal Caution: Cephalexin is cleared primarily via renal glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. In pets with significant renal impairment, dosing intervals may need adjustment by a veterinarian.

• Potential Side Effects: Generally well tolerated. Mild, transient gastrointestinal disturbances (vomiting, reduced appetite, or soft stools) can occur, which typically resolve when administered with meals.

• Storage: Store below 25°C in a dry place. Protect from heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. Keep unused tablet halves sealed inside the blister foil and administer within 3 days. Keep strictly out of reach of children and domestic pets.
