Active Composition & Pharmacological Action

• Active Ingredient: Levothyroxine Sodium 0.6 mg per tablet.

• Pharmacological Class: Synthetic Thyroid Hormone (Synthetic T4).

• Mode of Action: Levothyroxine acts as a prohormone. Following oral ingestion and intestinal absorption, circulating T4 is transported to peripheral organs (liver, kidneys, muscle) and enzymatically converted by 5'-deiodinase into the active hormone Liothyronine (T3). Intracellular T3 enters the cell nucleus and binds to thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) to stimulate cellular respiration, control DNA transcription, promote gluconeogenesis, and regulate basal metabolism.

Dosage & Administration Guidelines

Administer strictly according to your veterinarian’s weight-based calculation and regular serum T4 monitoring.

• Typical Starting Dose: Generally dosed at 0.02 mg to 0.04 mg per kg body weight daily, administered either as a single daily dose or divided into two equal doses every 12 hours.

• Administration & Meals: Consistency is crucial. Administer at the same time each day. Giving on an empty stomach is preferred for consistent absorption, but if given with food, ensure it is given with the same food routine consistently.

• Therapeutic Blood Monitoring: A post-pill T4 blood test is typically recommended 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment (or after any dose modification) to ensure therapeutic levels are achieved without over-supplementation.

• Duration: Hypothyroidism is generally a lifelong condition requiring continuous, uninterrupted daily therapy.

Contraindications & Precautions

• Adrenal Insufficiency: Contraindicated in pets with uncorrected adrenal cortical insufficiency (hypoadrenocorticism / Addison's disease), as thyroid hormone therapy increases metabolic clearance of cortisol, risking an adrenal crisis.

• Thyrotoxicosis: Do not use in animals with diagnosed thyrotoxicosis or acute myocardial infarction.

• Cardiovascular Disease: Use with caution in pets with pre-existing heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, or hypertension; starting at lower doses with gradual titration is advised.

• Signs of Overdose (Thyrotoxicosis): Excessive panting, rapid heart rate (tachycardia), increased thirst/urination (PU/PD), hyper-excitability, and rapid weight loss. If observed, contact your veterinarian immediately to adjust dosing.
